Ana María Fraile-Marcos is a Full Professor at the University of Salamanca, Spain, where she teaches English Canadian and postcolonial literatures. Her research examines how contemporary literature—specifically English Canadian texts—reshapes societal imaginaries and acts as an agent of decolonization and healing through the narrative representation of the interconnections between resilience, gender, indigeneity, diaspora, racialization, and the environment.
She serves as the principal investigator for the research project Postresilient Anthropocene Narratives: Aesthetic Ruptures, Critical Horizons, and Emotions beyond Adaptive Cycles—PANARCHIC (PID2025-167938NB-I00). This project continues the work of two previous initiatives funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities: Narrating Resilience, Achieving Happiness? Toward a Cultural Narratology—NARESH (PID2020-113190GB-C22) and Narratives of Resilience: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Literature and Other Cultural Representations (FFI2015-63895-C2-R).
Her extensive publications include the monograph Planteamientos estéticos y políticos en la obra de Zora Neale Hurston (The aesthetic and political underpinnings of Zora Neale Hurston’s work [2003]), alongside numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. She has also edited several critical volumes, including Literature, Culture, and Forms of Agency: The Emotional Life of Resilience (forthcoming with Routledge), Glocal Narratives of Resilience (2020), Literature and the Glocal City: Reshaping the English Canadian Imaginary (2014), and Richard Wright’s Native Son (2007).
Reflecting her contributions to research, she was honored with the “María de Maeztu” Award for Scientific Excellence from the University of Salamanca on February 26, 2026.
In addition to her research and teaching, Dr. Fraile is the Co-editor-in-Chief of the open-access journal Canada and Beyond: A Journal of Canadian Literary and Cultural Studies. She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Canada Chair: Climate Justice, Human Rights, and Public Policy at USAL, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Canada in Spain. She is also the co-founder and Director of the Master in Creative Writing at the University of Salamanca.
